Cerwin Vega is one of the famous brands that were producing loudspeakers. It was founded in 1954 and became noted for producing a speaker that can reach up to 130 dB with 30 Hz frequency. They were famous for supplying speakers to movie theater companies, such as Fender through the 1970s.

V468 comes from the expertise they gained over the years. V468 has curvilinear Mica Filled Poly Cone for woofer and 1-inch Aluminum Dome Tweeter. The material quality is satisfactory and looks like it will degrade slower than many speakers in the market.

It has a high level of sensitivity: 94 dB. You can play loud music with your stock head unit without making any adjustments.

These speakers have very well built, and to get the best they can do for you, try changing your head unit and insert an amplifier to your system. They can reach up to 113 dB at RMS level which will definitely satisfy you.

The mids and highs are crystal clear in this speaker. V468 can hit down to 55 Hz which is not satisfactory for a complete bass feeling. Since V468 has an average price tag, adding a subwoofer to your system will come up with a decent sound system upgrade for your car, we believe.

Buyer's Guide

Many terms may confuse you at first glance when you search for car speakers. Let's go over them quickly to give you a better understanding of what we are looking for while making our selection.

Material of Speakers

This is though physics questions. If you are looking for answers with formulas, you may visit this site.

Let us summarize here as well. Suppose you are in open space standing 1 meter away from your car speaker which is assumed to have 90 dB of sensitivity. If you provide 1-watt power to it, you will be hearing a sound with an intensity of 90 dB. If you double the power, the intensity will increase by +3 dB. Let's suppose you increase up to 64 (2^6) watts than the intensity will increase by +3*6 = 18 dB. Resulting sound intensity will be 108 dB.

In a car, you are in a very small cabin with all reflective surfaces. This will probably add to your sound intensity by +3 to +6 dB depending on your vehicle.

Above 110 dB, listening to music for a long period will have side effects such as loss in the hearing capacity in the long run. So aiming 105 dB for maximum intensity seems fair enough according to us.

More "Ways" Means Better Quality?

Not necessarily. Many high-end sound systems have only 2-way speakers that are powered with subwoofers.

As a term, "way" indicates how many drivers there are in speakers. 2-way speakers have a woofer and tweeter. Woofers are designed to handle low frequencies and they have a bigger surface area relative to tweeters. Tweeters, on the other hand, handles the high frequencies with a smaller body.

A 3-way speaker will have an additional mid-range driver so that the frequency range of woofer and tweeter can be specialized even more.

The 4-way speaker will also have a super tweeter for high frequencies.

In the same brand, an increasing number of ways will result in better sound quality. Of course, it comes with a price.

If you consider or already have a subwoofer on your system, going for a high-end 2-way speaker will be a better choice. If you are running on budget and do not want a subwoofer, then it is better to go for 3-way speakers at least, to reproduce lower frequencies.

Calculating the Loudness of Speakers

To check out how loud your speaker will be there are a few factors to be considered:

  1. The sensitivity value of speakers
  2. The RMS and Peak power handling of speakers
  3. The head unit or amplifier power

First and the most important value that you need to consider is the "Sensitivity" level of speakers. Sensitivity is calculated by giving the speaker 1-watt power and measuring the sound intensity 1 meter away from the speaker. The moderate level of speakers will have sensitivity around 80 dB and decent speakers will have +90dB.

The loudness of the speaker increases by its power. Doubling the power of the speaker, you will have an additional 3 dB of sound level. As an example consider a 90 dB sensitivity speaker:

  • 2 watts - 93 dB
  • 4 watts - 96 dB
  • 8 watts - 99 dB
  • 16 watts - 102 dB
  • 32 watts - 105 dB

Speaker power handling becomes important in this manner. Peak power handling levels are indicating the maximum power input of a speaker that can bare without failure. The RMS levels indicate the continuous power handling of a speaker without failing. Aiming for RMS value will be safe. At maximum, you may go for a %50 additional power input relative to the RMS level but do not aim for Peak level.

As of last, cars' stock head unit may provide power up to 30-50 watts. To go beyond that level, you will need to implement an amplifier to your sound system.

Frequency Range of Speakers

Frequency is regarding the speed of the soundwave. Soundwave speed is measured by Hertz (Hz). Our ear can hear sounds between 20 Hz to 20.000 Hz.

Lower frequency sounds are called bass and vice versa. Car speakers generally handle 20.000 thresholds without an issue but hitting low frequencies is not always easy. On the list of 6x8 speakers that we organized above, you may see that the most successful speaker on this subject is Pioneer TS-A6880F with getting as low as 34 Hz. This is a decent value and you may be satisfied with the bass performance of this speaker. However many other speakers on the list have the lowest frequency between 50-65 Hz level. We suggest adding a subwoofer with a decent crossover to your system to feel the bang.

Conclusion

6x8" speakers are big sized speakers that can generate loud music in your car easily. There are many brands producing for this category and the competition is fierce.

In our list for a 6x8" speaker with good bass, we selected as champion Cerwin VegaV468. Main reasons are;

  • Loudest of the list
  • Have a decent bass that kicks in
  • Clear mids and highs

Of course, this speaker has a frequency range that can go as low as 55 Hz and it is not satisfactory. The price tag is modest for this speaker which will hopefully save some money for a subwoofer.

If you have a tighter budget and can not afford a subwoofer, Pioneer TS-A8660F will be a better option for you. Yes, this speaker can not shout as loud as Vega, but they will have a deeper bass feeling with the ability to reproducing as low as 34 Hz sounds.
